Indoor Rock Climbing @ HangDog

Complete beginner? No problem. Rock climbing is not hard. In fact we have a saying

If you can climb a ladder, you can climb a wall.

...and its true. One of the greatest things about rock climbing is that you can climb at your own level. Whether that is a gentle not-quite vertical slope (like a ladder) to a hard overhang (like a horizontal ladder).

Come in any time and give climbing a go. We will run you through the basics to make sure you will be safe and then we will let you go free.

If you aren't confident in your own ability to just have a go you can book an Introduction to Climbing Lesson. Here are some of the frequently asked questions that beginners have.

Can anyone climb? Yes!...well not literally. But almost anyone can climb. From 5yrs - 70yrs...from can't run 100m to can run a marathon...we've seen it all. Remember, you climb at your own level. You can even go with someone much fitter because they climb at their level and you climb at yours.
Do I need fancy equipment? No. We can supply all the equipment you need. You only need loose clothes.
Is it safe? Yes, it is. All of our equipment is top quality and we make your safety our priority.
How long does it take? When you enter you get a Day Pass and can climb as long as we are open. Most people find two hours to be enough to get exhausted.
Will it make me fit? Climbing is an awesome form of excercise. It'll tone up your body in ways you wouldn't have thought possible.
Does it get cold in winter? People prefer climbing in winter over summer because it is cooler. As long as you are climbing you wont be cold.
What should I wear? All you need is clothes that don't restrict your movement. Skirts and dresses are not advised.
Do I need fancy shoes? "Fancy" rock climbing shoes are great for improving your climbing. You can climb in sneakers or hire shoes. Climbing with bare feet is not allowed.
Do I have to go all the way to the top? No. You can decide when you want to come down. The goal is to challenge yourself, so stop just after you have been challenged.
How do I get down? Your belay buddy will lower you slowly and safely by using their belay device (which HangDog provides).
What happens if I let go of the wall or slip? The rope will catch you and you will hang next to the wall. You can either come down, or have a rest while sitting in your harness and then get back on the wall to keep going from where you stopped.
Once I get to the top what else can I do? The goal is not to get to the top but to challenge yourself. Our walls are covered in routes with different grades or levels. This means that you can find a climb just above your grade and challenge yourself to complete it.
How can people who climb more than once a week not get bored? Climbing is about two things. First and foremost it is a social sport and everyone always enjoys hanging out with friends. Secondly, it is all about personal challenge. The great thing about rock climbing is that there can always be a harder route to try so you can always challenge yourself. Because we change our routes (see route setting) you can find the level of challenge you are looking for.
