2008 Winter Bouldering Series Results

Round One

The 7th HangDog Winter Boulder Series started with a bang! The chalk was flying, the atmosphere pumping and HangDog was jam-packed with lots of happy boulderers. With 59 problems and 55 climbers (the biggest turn-out ever!) and a lot of new faces amongst the familiar ones, wall space was at a premium Never fear! We have some creative ideas to have more climbing surfaces for the next round!

Congratulations to everyone who took part and also the winners of the round - Cieran McBride winning the Elite Male, Amie Jones in the Elite Female (followed very closely by Georgia). Greg Baum took out the Recreational Male with a new face - Magalie Boucher winning the Recreational Female. HangDog's brother and sister dream-team Josiah and Tessa Jacobsen-Grocott won the Male and Female Under 16s grades respectively.

Free chalk and amazing spot prizes from Metolious and HangDog finished off the evening. There are more great spot prizes up for grabs too - think Metolious Rock-Rings, NZAC Climber Mag Subscriptions, First Aid kits from Lifeflight, Car Speakers from The Car Stereo Company and lots of other goodies from HangDog. Remember the more rounds you enter, the more chance of winning a big spot prize at the finals!

Bouldering is a great way to introduce friends to climbing, and it is super social, why not try to drum up a few friends for the next round. The more people we have, the more fun it is!

Use your eyes! Watch what other people are doing on the same problem. See what works and what doesn't.

Round two

You guys rock! Despite the cold winter and dark nights, it was great to see so many people keeping warm and having fun at HangDog!

Competition is also getting hot with some very high scores this round. The V8 Limbo Traverse boosted the scores and contributed to some unexpected results (check out the pictures!).

The winners of round 2 are as follows:

U16 Male: Jonas LaMarche
Recreational Female: Becci Whitton
Recreational Male: Alex Thomson
Elite Female: Judy Cheng
Elite Male: Callum and Pete

Best Spotting: Becci Whitton
(keep it up guys, staff will be keeping an eye out for the best spotters...)

After two brilliant turnouts at the HangDog Winter Boulder Series, round 3 is now only a few days away. Rev up all your friends and bring them along for a great night!

Round 3 is on Wednesday 18 June with more awesome spot prizes - see you all then!

WOW! That was the biggest turnout to the boulder comp ever! With over 65 competitors crammed into HangDog the winter chill was quickly extracted from the air and replaced with chalk, laughter and a lot of bouldering.

Problems ranged from dynamic and reachy to delicate and balancy, with a variation of the Limbo Traverse providing a lot of entertainment.

A big THANK YOU to our route-setters Sean, Bob, Pete and Mark who put in a great effort and created some quality routes. Also, a big THANK YOU to our sponsors for some wicked prizes - HangDog, The NZAC, Metolius Climbing, Lifeflight Trust, and The Car Stereo Company (now go out and buy their stuff).

Congratulations to the winners of round 3:

4) The move isn't over until you've got the hold... A lot of people let their bodies sag just before they grab the hold. Keep the tension there until the hold is firmly in your hand.

5) Get a spotter. On those highball problems and dynamic moves you will have a lot more confidence if there is someone to catch you.
